Prompt One.

The issues raised by media ownership in contemperary media practice.
The problems raised by a company that own the rights to a new video game.

- Loyal Customers may not be able to access online information.
- License may not be accessable from the previous media owner, creating a problem between companies in comtemperary media practice.

GTA IV:
Sony owned all games up until GTA IV, when GTA IV was realeased there was no console better than the other between Rockstar and Sony, therefore, the game was sold to both companies. Microsoft wanted the game aswell so payed Rockstar $50 million and added online games content, meaning more customers for Microsoft amd $50 Million for Rockstar therefore Sony lost out as well as their customers.

Fifa 10:
Media ownership, EA Sports, Third party games developer, because it's Vertically Intergrated. the rights to the game were not passed on. Synergy, with lots of companies. Ulimate team which is an add on for the Xbox. this can be downloaded on from the Xbox market place.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games:
Media ownership, Nintendo and Sega. Horizontally intergrated.

Industry as a Whole:
Media ownership can
The issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically British) by international or global institution.

The things organization have to consider when producing a product for a specific audience.

Marketing - GTA target audience was teenagers, mostly boys, they addressed them by advertising their game with a stereotypical boys interest. For example, billboards in cities with pictures of women.

Gears of war had a similar marketing strategy as their target audience is near enough the same. Instead of showing women in their advertisement, they showed more of what their game was about, violence and guns, which would be boys interest.

When

Prompt Question...

The Importance Of Cross Media Convergence And Synergy In Production, Distribution And Marketing...

GTA4...
- Advertising GTA4 on the TV, internet, magazines, guerilla marketing and billboards.
- When advertising the game on TV they also have the console advertised at the end e.g Xbox, PlayStation.
-Made by two companies- Synergy (Rage and Euphoria)
- Convergence because you can play it online through Xbox Live or Playstation Network

FIFA 10...
- Fifa 10 is not only available to play on Xbox and Playstation but also on iPod Touch, the iPhone and other mobiles phones.
- linked with coke and you received codes to download content

Sims...
- The original Sims can only be played on PCs and Macs and it was created specifically for Microsoft.
-Advertising on Facebook, trailer on TV

Industry as a whole...
-Synergy- Film with a game to go with it
-Sony and Nintendo were going to make a playstation but then nintendo backed out

The significance of proliferation in the hardware and content for institutions and audiences

The significance of a rapid increase in products and technology for companies and potential consumers.

Industry
New consoles, games and technology to keep in competition with other companies. Increasing the amount of technology designed in a short period of time attracts consumers to specific games and consoles.

Grand Theft Auto
GTA 4 have released downloadable content, extra story lines, missions, weapons, outfits etc for consumers. To keep GTA gamers interested in the game, and carry on making money.

Playstation vs Xbox
Xbox came out first with XboxLive, the newest and best online gameing gaming technology, so Playstation come up with PS3 online for free competing with mocrosoft, all the new teschnology confuses consumers as they don't know which console to buy.

Fight Night Round 4
EA sports update technology for fight night round 4 to warn off over fighting games, by making downloadable content available such as newer boxers, clothing, gloves etc.
This way they can keep consumers content with Fight Night Round 4 until Fight Night Round 5 comes out. Also to carry on making money after the excitement dies down.

Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty created hype before the release of the game with 5 other successful games once the game was out it brought new downloadable content such as new maps which you can play with your friends online.

number 5

What is the importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences.

More practical for the consumer, for example, a phone with a camera instead of a phone and a camera. Or GTA 4 playing the game and talking to friends over the console. And with the X-Box where ¥ou can store your music play videos and even watch SKY TV.

Could be cheaper. You don't have to buy any extra add ons with GTA it comes with the console like the PS3 where internet browsing and playing comes free with it. Or like the X-Box you have to pay for it(the internet etc) with the console not the game.

Less complicated, one product can act as many. The X-Box does pretty much everything that a TV DVD Stereo does but it is all found in one box.

More opportunity to engage the consumer with the product, for example, the magazine esquire. And the leader boards in GTA 4 and 'Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2'

Brand awareness. People begin to trust Rockstar North so more tempted to buy extras from them. People who buy Half life 2 will be more tempted to buy some of their newer games this goes with COD as well.

It can be too technologically advanced for some people, maybe the elderly and children. The console controllers can seem very confusing at first and can cause a lot of hassle. Someone elderly probably wouldn't bother with the hassle and stick with what they know.

Some convergences are un-needed and used as gimmicks to sell products for more. Like the music in GTa 4, its not practical but it is popular so used to sell more and the Photo storing in consoles like the PS3 or X-Box

With the competition for companies to have the more advanced things(to sell more) products will start to become overcrowded with too much convergence. There might also be too much choice from the various types of convergence, so people might start to be put off from buying anything at all.

Question number 3

The technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, distribution, exchange and marketing?

What new technologies have been introduced in recent years to help with the production, distribution, exchange and marketing?

Production - The new technologies for production is the machinery used. In previous years the games used to come in cartridges and now they come on small discs. GTA 4 used rage and euphoria, which are there two games engine to create a new universe and a free roaming game. However the games that we chose used a different games engine, Mario kart for the Wii used a games engine called unreal. Preliferation makes things like Xbox live happen in a short period of time but create a huge affect, Xbox live lets you search for games and content online.

Distribution - The new distribution methods are that you can download the game via the internet and download them off the consoles websites. For GTA 4 you were able to have the demo downloaded or buy them in store or order them straight to you from websites such as amazon. For the game that we chose fight night round 4 you could download a demo off the consoles website but the game had to be bought in store off ordered off the internet.

Exchange - In previous years you would need to buy addons from the shop for your game, but now you can purchase or win special points that let you download addons such as new weapons and new characters from the consoles website. In GTA 4 you can use points or buy codes to get new clothes and guns for the character. On Mario you can earn points which lead to higher levels, new characters and new equipment. Coca Cola gave special codes on their bottles so that you could get new balls, kits and celebrations on Fifa.

Marketing - The new forms of marketing used in recent years are viral marketing and guerrilla marketing. Viral marketing is word of mouth internet marketing and guerrilla marketing is illegal posters going up and flyers being handed out. For GTA 4 they used guerrilla marketing by putting graffiti on billboards and sticking posters on walls, also they had special websites on social network sites such as facebook related to the characters. Even if you don't go and like the page that it is on it will automatically come up if your friends do. For a marketing strategy with fight night round 4 you could get posters of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton which are the two fighters you could get on the demo.

Developer

The 1st part of the whole process where the game is thought designed and md=ade. The people who do this have the software and hardware.
PROLIFERATION - A rapid increase in hardware/ content n a short period of time.
Media Ownership - When a company buys the rights to use to game. For example, turning a game into a film.

Sand Box

Is a free roaming virtual city/world/universe.

Definitions of Viral Marketing and Horizontal Integration

Viral Marketing

This is when games are advertised through word of mouth and the internet.

Horizontal Integration

When the game is developed, published and distributed by the same company.

Termonology

Convergence = Two or more applications in one piece of technology, for example a mobile phone has a camera as well as games, texting, internet etc.

Third Party Game

A third party game is where a games manufacturer makes a game and sells it to all the consoles, so it is not exclusive to one.

Second Party Game

A second party game is something that uses a combination of vertical and horizontal integration, this means that the company might do some of the steps and rely on other companies to do others. A second party sells the rights to a specific console so that it can only be played on it.

Terms...

Synergy: Two companies working together to create a bigger impact!

Killer App: When a certain character is unique to a certain console like Sonic or Mario. This makes the console desirable to the consumer.

THe company (Activision) had stated that modern warfare had broken the pre-order record for the companies long history of highly antisipated games.

Marketing
Starting point:-
  • The series of Call of Duty games are already very successful and have in place a strong fan base and a good reputation, internationally.
  • The game received a large reception in the press with specialist and well known magazines writing articles on the forthcoming game. Even newspaper like the LA times (quote, 'Modern Warfare 2’s intense and seamless action easily makes it the game of the year.') and NY times had articles on the game(some of the articles weren't the most positive articles on the game but never the less they provided publicity, an increased awareness and, 'Hot Coffee'.)
Strategy:-
  • Carefully choreographed demos were created to be played in front of an audience of magazine critics. These demos were also used in instore game consoles for consumers to try out(this process took place slightly later, after articles had been written)
  • Several trailers released with popular music from artists like Eminem being used as the tracking (celebrity endorsement) The first of these trailers was released on March 25th 2009 onto the Infinity Ward website. Shortly after this realeased onto the Xbox and PS3 online marketplace. On October 4th 2009 another trailer was released giving away the setting to be Washington DC in war-torn circumstances(a nationally well known place so adds to the excitement of the game)

  • There was big hype and a huge build up to the launch date creating a buzz. The opportunity to pre-order this game added to this buzz and ended up breaking the company's record for pre-orders.
  • In September 2009 'Monster Energy' a popular energy drink teamed up with Activision and people were able to get bonus' for the game by typing in codes, from the canned drinks, online. This created more hype to the release ----->(!!!!!!!SYNERGY!!!!!!!)<-----
  • Different packs of the game were announced, one of which came with AA powered night vision goggles.
  • In September 2009 Microsoft announced a Modern Warfare 2 version of the Xbox which had a 250GB ram and came with 2 wireless controllers and headsets
  • A 6 part comic book of the Modern Warfare 2 character, Ghost was announced on August 17th 2009 and then(the first issue) released November 11th 2009.

Distribution - Getting the product from the company to the customer, by selling to retailers.

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 can be bought at the majority of gaming/electronic shops, such as Game, Game-station, Zavvi, HMV, Dixons etc...
It can also be purchased online from online stores like Amazon and Play. Tesco, Asda and other major supermarkets also sell it in their stores or online.

Modern Warfare 2 is sold at a recommended retail price (RRP) of £54.99, however the majority of its distributors sell it cheaper to attract more customers.

Downloadable Content -

Infinity Ward released downloadable content for Modern Warfare 2, containing five new maps, which was called the 'Stimulus' map pack.
This was released first for Xbox on 30th March 2010, and on May 4th 2010 for Playstation and PC.
It cost 1200 Microsoft Points, which is £12.

In the first 24 hours of Modern Warfare 2 going on sale, it sold 4.7 million copies across the UK and USA. Activision racked up $310 million from just the first day of being on sale.
On March 16th 2010, over 14 million copies worldwide had been sold 18 weeks after the release date.
Modern Warfare 2 is the second best selling game in the UK.

The game is available to be played Solo - as you play through the eyes of the main character on the storyline. Split Screen - is where you have 1-4 players on one console where you can play dirrefernt game modes such as Search and Destroy Team Deathmatch etc. Online is where you can play on the PSN worldwide network with the main Playstation consumers are from europe or bring friends into your gaming lobby where you can play against your friends shooting them and completing objectives or play with them tactically against others on the PSN.
Headsets are advised to be used with this game as it brings a new element to the game tactically playing against others or/and having a dig at your mate on the team for killing you!

playstation network

Why would PlayStation offer an online service free ?

-To attract potential customers to the console,

What features do they have?

-Internet, can browse on any websites
-PlayStation Network, allows you to play online against friends or anyone in the world
-PlayStation Store, users can download demos, games and add-ons here, this is just like Xbox's Market Place
-BBC iPlayer, is a unique feature on a PS3
-VidZone, this allows you to watch thousands of music videos for free
-Friends List, you can chat to anyone through instant messaging or through a headset and you can see what games friends are playing, you can choose your own Avatar
-The online services are updated every Thursday, this means users can access new content

Is there anything extra?

-Users of the PS3 can access a web browser in which they can browse any website they want. This is different to the Xbox as they are restricted to certain sites

From your research which service do you think is better and why?

In our opinion the PlayStation 3 is better because the online services are free and offer the same or similar services to the Xbox 360. However we did consider how the PlayStation is more expensive to purchase but you would spend that much paying for the Gold Service on the Xbox.

Overall there are 8 expansion packs including pets, nightlife, freetime. There are also 10 stuff packs including H&M fashion, family fun, glamour life.

A. Sony give their users a free online service because of the price difference with the Xbox 360, the Xbox is only £149.00 for the most standard model where as the PS3 is £299.00. 3. Is there any thing extra?
A. On the Play Station you can access blue ray films which the Xbox is not compatible because it does not have the correct software.

4. From your research which service do you think is better and why?
A. I think that you get more online entertainment features on the PS3 and the same gaming features as the Xbox so i think the PS3 is better, but the Xbox is cheaper and still good but not s good. Also the PS3 is faster and connects to the internet faster.

5. How can GTA4 be accessed and played online.
A. GTA4 is the first GTA game that allows you to have crime online. This allows you to play online with up to 16 different players. The host of the party can adjust the settings for example the amount of weapons and cars. Each time you kill a pedestrian you get $100 and the aim is to gain as much money as you can. Consumption:

Creating

You can create a person or family. There are different steps to creating sims. You can create the skin color (light, medium or dark), the sex of the sim (male or female), and then everything about the sim. You can change the way their face looks by changing the eyebrows, eyes, chin, nose and cheek bone shapes. You can also change their hairstyles.

Clothing

Chosing clothing for a sim is also quite a task. There are numerous shirts and pants to chose from; they can also change the style of the shirt.

Before creating the sim, you need to enter the family's last name. It can be anything you want- like Smith, or Dork, or whatever comes to your mind.

Once you've created the sim of your choice, you need to name them. You have the option of either naming them in the beginning, or naming them at the end. I chose to name them at the end, because you can see what their style is like.

Personalities

There's even an option for chosing their personalities. The sims can have their astrological signs. Under the astrological signs are scales of certain qualities, like neatness to sloppiness, outgoing to shy, lazy to active, and grouchy to nice.

Aspirations

Under personalities, you can chose aspirations for your sims. There are also many different aspirations to chose from- there's the family, popularity, knowledge, romance, fortune, and pleasure aspiration.

You can't play The Sims with other people, its just you and your PC. You also can't chat to other people whilst playing the game as there is no headset to use. But there are some blog websites that people can chat on to work out cheats and help each other progress in the game.

This makes the game interactive and personal.

You can play Sims on Microsoft Windows, Mac computers, Play station 2, Xbox and GameCube.
